In order to obtain an Upper Austrian hunting licence for the first time, proof must be provided that a sufficient liability insurance is in place. For the extension of the validity of the Upper Austrian hunting licence, the liability insurance premium must be paid for the respective hunting year (April to March).
Requirements
A hunting licence can be obtained subject to proof
- of reliability as required in connection with hunting practice;
- of fitness to hunt;
- of a sufficient hunting liability insurance;
- that there are no grounds for refusal within the meaning of Sec. 39.
The hunting liability insurance shall cover any damage caused by the holder of a hunting licence through the possession or use of hunting weapons and hunting dogs, through the use of trapping devices and through the existence of hunting facilities.
Deadlines
Where a hunting licence is issued for the first time, sufficient liability insurance shall be proven upon issue, otherwise at the start of each hunting year. Timely payment of such fees extends the validity of the hunting licence for another hunting year. Otherwise, the hunting licence becomes valid for the current hunting year only upon payment of such fees.

Procedure
Before the hunting licence is issued by the state hunting officer, the annual membership fee shall be paid to the Upper Austrian State Hunting Association; the hunting liability insurance is included in such fee. The validity of your hunting licence will be extended by another hunting year (starting from 1 April) upon payment of the membership fee (containing the hunting liability insurance premium) to the Upper Austrian State Hunting Association at the start of each hunting year.

The amount of the minimum insurance sum is governed by the Verordnung betreffend die Mindestversicherungssumme für die Jagdhaftpflichtversicherung [Regulation on the Minimum Insurance Sum regarding Hunting Liability Insurance], Official State Gazette no. 26/2011 (minimum insurance sum amounting to 4 million euros per damage event as a blanket coverage for personal injuries (injuries suffered by one or several persons) and/or property damage (one or several instances of property damage)).
