Freedom to choose "GMcrop-free" in Upper Austria - the alliance of the Regions

Upper Austria calls upon the right of self-determination of Regions to stay GMcrop-free and therefore took initiative together with Tuscany in creating the "network of GMcrop-free Regions in Europe".

In addition to the final goal, namely to ban the cultiviation of GMOs and of seeds and of plants containing GMOs, Upper Austria is concerned about the general decision, that a region in Europe must have the right to decide itself GMO-free or not.

Nowadays, to be GMO-free is a feature, which increases the marketing opportunities of our products and which can be an essential reason for the settlement and location of new processing plants. Therefore Upper Austria is of high interest as a business location.

Upper Austria wants to become a specialized region for sensitive and high-sensitive food products in the mid-term, such as for baby food, food for allergics and of course for the entire organic sector.

Upper Austria is not the only region in Europe with that desire and therefore created in 2003 - together with Tuscany as the 2nd front-runner - the "network of GMcrop-free Regions in Europe". The major goal of this network is to put pressure on the European Commission, to clarify that Regions have the right to decide whether they are in favour of the cultivation of GMOs or not and to bring back the topic on the European agenda and discussion.
